The Argentine hobbled off after suffering an injury in the first minute of City's win over the Toffees and will play no part in the Champions League showdown in Rome
Manchester City striker Sergio Aguero will miss their decisive Champions League group stage match against Roma on Wednesday after suffering a knee ligament injury against Everton on Saturday night.
Aguero lasted barely a minute of the game before appearing to twist his left knee in a challenge against Phil Jagielka, hobbling from the field in tears with the player's reaction suggesting he would be out for some time.
His manager, Manuel Pellegrini, admitted that the short-term outlook for the 19-goal striker would not be good with Roma on the horizon, as the nature of the injury would not lend itself to swift recovery.
"Probably he will miss the game," he told reporters in his press conference.
"We are not sure at this moment, but it's very difficult when you have a problem with your ligament to recover in three days.
"Of course, it's a big problem because Sergio was in a very good moment. He is a decisive player for our team but this team is not just Sergio."
City go to Roma in need of at least a score draw while also hoping that CSKA Moscow lose to Bayern. But Pellegrini also does not expect David Silva or Stevan Jovetic to be fit to face the Serie A side in midweek.
"Silva is not ready," he said. "Jovetic has a problem so that's why we are pleased to beat Everton, a very good team, without five very important players.
"[Jovetic] has a small problem with his hamstring. We'll see tomorrow what happens."
